What I Do When My Mind Feels Heavy

Some days, I wake up and feel it before my feet even hit the floor.
That mental weight.
The to-do list running through my head.
The tension in my chest that whispers, “There’s too much, and you’re not enough.”
As a woman, a mom, a business owner, and a believer, I’ve learned to recognize those days for what they are: invitations. Not to quit, but to pause. To check in with my heart, my habits, and most importantly, my connection with God.
Here’s what I do when my mind feels heavy:
1. I stop striving and start breathing.
Sometimes I don’t need to do more, I need to breathe deeper. A few minutes of deep, intentional breathing grounds me. It reminds my nervous system that I’m safe. And when I pair those breaths with prayer? Peace starts to push out the panic.
2. I move gently, intentionally, without pressure.
I used to think I needed to go all-in with a workout to feel better. But now, I know even a short walk or light stretching is enough to shift my mood. Movement is medicine, not punishment. It clears the fog and gets me out of my head and back into my body.
3. I get honest with God.
I don’t try to dress up my prayers. I tell Him exactly how I feel...stressed, anxious, sad, overwhelmed. And every single time, He meets me in that honesty. I’ve found more comfort in raw, tearful prayers than in perfect, polished ones.
4. I check my inputs.
When my mental load is heavy, I ask: What am I consuming right now?
Too much scrolling, too many voices, too much noise can cloud my thoughts. I trade some of that for worship music, scripture, or silence. My soul doesn’t need more stimulation, it needs space.
5. I remember I’m not alone.
Sometimes the enemy wants us to feel isolated in our struggle. But we’re never truly alone. Jesus promised to be with us always, and He often sends people to walk beside us too. Whether it’s a trusted friend, a coach, or a counselor, reaching out is strength—not weakness.
Mental heaviness doesn’t make you weak, it makes you human.
But you don’t have to stay stuck in that place. There is always a next step. There is always grace for today. And there is always a God who sees you, carries you, and walks with you through it all.
If your mind feels heavy today, let this be your reminder:
Pause. Breathe. Pray. Move. Repeat.
You don’t have to do it all. You just have to take one step at a time, with Him.
If this spoke to you, I’d love to hear from you. You’re not alone—and you don’t have to carry the weight alone either.
